Intensive Alternative Family Treatment

UNC School of Social Work
We overcame pandemic filming challenges and HIPPA restrictions by creating this hand-drawn, faceless animation style to safely and authentically share real IAFT foster care stories for UNC Chapel Hill’s School of Social Work.

Telling Sensitive Stories with Animation

When UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Social Work needed to communicate the impact of a powerful foster care initiative, they turned to us for a strategic video solution. The goal was to explain Intensive Alternative Family Treatment (IAFT), a program that supports foster children with high emotional and behavioral needs, through a medium that respected both privacy and authenticity. To meet this challenge, we crafted a sensitive animated explainer video that helped real stories shine—without revealing real faces.

An Animated Explainer Video for a Delicate Topic

Because this project was produced during the COVID-19 pandemic, traditional filming was not possible. More importantly, HIPAA regulations meant that no real children or families could be shown on screen. These dual constraints pushed us toward a unique creative solution: hand-drawn, faceless character animation.

This style allowed us to capture emotional nuance while protecting the identity of everyone involved. The result was expressive and visually engaging, yet respectful and universal. Through character movement and narration, viewers could still feel the gravity and hope within each story.

Creativity That Protects and Connects

In many ways, this project is a perfect example of how the right creative partner can help you navigate communication roadblocks. Whether it’s legal limitations or technical ones, we find solutions that keep your message intact—and powerful.

By embracing animation, we transformed limitations into strengths. We created a compassionate, accessible tool that resonates with audiences like families, social workers, and potential foster parents. Even more, the final product helped amplify the program’s message in a way that traditional video never could.
