Stormwater pollution is a big deal, but let’s be honest—stormwater education can be dry. To make it engaging, the Town of Fuquay-Varina’s Engineering Department partnered with Amazing Studios to create a four-part video series that blends education with entertainment. Each video tackled a different stormwater issue through the lens of a classic movie genre, using humor and familiar storytelling tropes to drive home key messages about protecting local waterways.
The Challenge
Stormwater runoff impacts everyone, but most people don’t realize how their daily actions contribute to pollution. The town needed a creative way to break through the noise and make stormwater education both fun and memorable.
Creative Solution
Amazing Studios crafted a series of four cinematic parodies, each spoofing a well-known movie genre while educating viewers on stormwater best practices. A recurring mysterious character named Storm Walter appears in each movie.
- “Stormwater Activity” (Horror Spoof)
- Premise: Two frightened girls are followed by a mysterious character. As they run into their home, he follows them – giving them a very important message about stormwater.
- “An Illicit Affair to Remember” (Romantic Drama Spoof)
- Premise: Storm Walter saves a heartfelt proposal in the rain while preventing stormwater pollution.
- “The Good, The Bad, and The Stormwater” (Western Spoof)
- Premise: A Wild West Sherriff confronts a mysterious bandit, who just might happen to be Storm Walter.
- “The Storm Ultimatum” (Action/Suspense Spoof)
- Premise: Storm Walter helps a police officer disarm a bomb as he tries to pass on his important information about stormwater.
These videos prove that stormwater education doesn’t have to be boring. By using humor and cinematic storytelling helps to reinforce positive behaviors for stormwater protection.
We loved turning an overlooked topic into entertaining and informative content. By blending education with humor and pop culture references, this series made stormwater awareness something people actually want to talk about.
