Real-World Experience. Real Classroom Impact.
The Kenan Fellows Program at NC State gives teachers the chance to step outside the classroom—and into industries that power their communities. One of its most impactful and long-standing partnerships is with North Carolina Electric Cooperatives. Here, teachers spend time shadowing linemen and learning how energy is delivered across the state.
To highlight the power of this partnership, we created the Kenan Fellows Program video that tells the story of a teacher who participated in the program through Union Power Cooperative. The video also includes insights from Kenan Fellows leadership and representatives from the cooperative, offering a full picture of the impact.

Connecting Curriculum to Career
By gaining hands-on experience in the energy sector, teachers return to their classrooms with more than just new knowledge—they return with renewed passion. They’re better equipped to show students how STEM subjects apply in real life. This helps young people discover exciting career opportunities in their own backyard.
Programs like this not only improve student engagement but also strengthen community ties. They show students that what they’re learning today could power the communities of tomorrow.

Statewide Impact, One Teacher at a Time
We’ve had the privilege of documenting multiple teacher journeys through the Kenan Fellows Program with North Carolina Electric Cooperatives. While each story is unique, one thing stays the same: a deepened connection between education and industry that benefits everyone involved.
