Public Utilities Series

Town of Fuquay-Varina
Using humor to debunk common water and wastewater misconceptions, this four part series educates residents on proper treatment and conservation.

Municipal Video Production for Fuquay-Varina

When the Town of Fuquay-Varina needed a fun and effective way to engage the public, they turned to municipal video production. Their Public Utilities Department partnered with us to create an entertaining four-part video series that breaks down myths and misconceptions about water and wastewater systems. Our goal? Educate the community with content that was memorable, accessible—and funny.

Using Humor to Explain Complex Systems

Many residents held misconceptions about where their water came from, where wastewater ended up, and what water conservation truly meant. To tackle this, we developed four creative shorts that each highlighted a common misunderstanding—followed by the real story.

1. “How People Think Wastewater Is Treated”

A wild-eyed conspiracy theorist sneaks into the treatment plant to find proof of the mythical Megalodung—a fictional monster that supposedly eats wastewater. We then clarify the town’s actual, regulated process for treating and safely disposing of wastewater.

2. “Where People Think Wastewater Goes”

In this episode, Cousin Eddie makes a messy appearance, dumping wastewater into storm drains. Of course, the real journey of wastewater—through a managed treatment system—is explained with clarity and care.

3. “What People Think Conservation Means”

Residents imagine ridiculous solutions: mid-shower water shutoffs or misting lawns with tiny spray bottles. The reality? Practical tips like xerigation, rain barrels, and fixing household leaks.

4. “Where People Think Water Comes From”

This segment starts with a shady back-alley deal, mobsters haggling over bottled tap water. It quickly pivots to explain how Fuquay-Varina’s water is professionally sourced, treated, and distributed.

Why This Municipal Video Production Worked

By combining humor with visual storytelling, we made complex topics easy to understand and more engaging for the community. Rather than relying on dry facts or brochures, this campaign connected with residents through laughter and curiosity. The videos not only dispelled misinformation, but also boosted awareness about the real work being done to maintain public utilities.
