Public Utilities Series

Town of Fuquay-Varina
Using humor to debunk common water and wastewater misconceptions, this four part series educates residents on proper treatment and conservation.

To educate residents on water treatment and conservation, the Town of Fuquay-Varina’s Public Utilities Department partnered with Amazing Studios to create a four-part video series debunking common misconceptions about water and wastewater management. Each video used a humorous and exaggerated scenario to contrast popular myths with the reality of the town’s water treatment processes.

The Challenge

Many residents hold misconceptions about where their water comes from, how wastewater is treated, and what conservation really entails. The goal was to make these topics engaging, accessible, and memorable through a creative and entertaining approach.

Creative Solution

Amazing Studios developed a series of four videos, each tackling a specific misconception:

  1. “How People Think Wastewater Is Treated”
    • Misconception: Wastewater is fed to a mythical creature called the ‘Megalodung’. We staged a conspiracy theorist breaking into the wastewater treatment plant in an effor to prove his theory.
    • Reality: The video explains the town’s thorough wastewater treatment process, ensuring safe and environmentally responsible disposal.
  1. “Where People Think Wastewater Goes”
    • Misconception: Wastewater is dumped into nearby stormdrains by everyone’s favorite Cousin Eddie.
    • Reality: The video illustrates how wastewater is processed at treatment facilities and returned safely to the environment.
  1. “What People Think Conservation Means”
    • Misconception: Water conservation means your water cutting off mid-shower or using a small spray bottle to water your lawn.
    • Reality: Practical conservation tips, such as fixing leaks, rainwater harvesting, and xerigation are highlighted.
  1. “Where People Think Water Comes From”
    • Misconception: Drinking water comes from shady back alley deals with mobsters.
    • Reality: The video educates viewers on how the town sources, treats, and distributes clean drinking water.

Through this creative video series, we helped the Town of Fuquay-Varina effectively educate its residents about the realities of water and wastewater treatment. By blending humor with educational content, the campaign transformed complex topics into engaging and memorable experiences for the community.
